Columbus discovers Martinique in 1502. For these inhabitants, the Carib Indians (who have exterminated the Arawaks), Martinique is Madinina, the flower island.
As part of DOM, Martinique has a population of 394,000 inhabitant. Geographically, it lies in the Caribbean Sea. Its capital is Fort-de-France. It speaks the French of course but also the Creole is the native language of Martinique. About Half the people living in and around the capital Fort-de-France.

Economic activity consists primarily of agricultural crops (banana, sugar cane) and also tourism.
